The by-election for the Kaliganj assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Nadia district will be held on June 19, with counting of votes scheduled for June 23. The Election Commission announced the date to fill the seat left vacant by the death of former MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed on February 1.
According to election rules, a bypoll must be conducted within six months of a seat becoming vacant, and the Kaliganj election fits within that timeline, ahead of the July 31 deadline. With West Bengal assembly elections expected next year, this by-election is being closely watched as a political bellwether.
The Election Commission has released the final electoral roll, listing 2,52,670 eligible voters in Kaliganj. Voting will take place at 309 polling stations, with three-tier security in place. Central forces will be stationed at all booths, and webcasting will be used to monitor the process.
Officials emphasize that all security and logistical measures are being taken to ensure free and fair polling. Given the current political atmosphere in the state, this by-election is seen as an important signal ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.
The focus now shifts to the electorate of Kaliganj as political parties prepare to contest a vote that could offer early clues to the state's shifting political winds.
